Obituary

Dr. Arlie Emerson Bonar was born June 28, 1926 to Drs. William and Blanche Bonar in Nevada, Missouri. He passed away into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 25, 2010. An only child he and his parents moved to Springfield at the age of two. He attended public schools and graduated from Senior High in 1943. He served in the Navy V5 program three years working toward becoming a Navy pilot during World War II. After the War he returned home graduating from Drury College in 1947 with a degree in mathematics. He was a member of Sigma Nu and active in their track program. He married Norma June Williams August 8, 1947. They moved to Ames, Iowa where he taught math at Iowa State. Deciding to join his parents, he enrolled at Logan Chiropractic College in St. Louis. Upon graduation he returned to Springfield where the three of them opened a new clinic at 519 East Walnut. He practiced 50 years, retiring in 2001, after being diagnosed with Parkinson's. Arlie was appointed, by the Governor, to the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. He taught math at Drury in the Adult Education for 25 years. He served as Board Chairman, Elder, Sunday School teacher and Boy Scout leader and helped establish the Outreach Foundation while a member (50 years) at National Avenue Christian Church. He enjoyed outdoor sports of baseball, river floating, hunting and working on his farm near Turner's Station. Arlie and his wife enjoyed traveling many times to Europe and especially France. He studied five years of French (at Drury) in his 60's in order to communicate with his French friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, William Arlie (Bill) Bonar. Survivors include his wife, Norma; daughter, Janna Woods and her husband, Dr. Bill Woods; and daughter, Elizabeth (Beth) Hopkins; four grandchildren, Emily Baldwin, Kansas City; Lindsey Arellano and their husbands, Matt Baldwin and Jason Arellano, Katherine Hopkins, Billy Hopkins, five great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, George Williams and wife, June; Phillip Williams and wife, Jeanne, St. Louis; and two nieces and one nephew. A current member of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, services will be held there, Friday, May 28, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. A reception will follow the services at the church. Private burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.
