IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arlene Dolores
Bolyard
May 19, 1932 – February 4, 2025
Arlene Bolyard passed away on the 4th of February, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO. Born on May 19th, 1932, she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ford. Arlene has been reunited with her husband, Doyle, of 70 years prior to his death in 2020.
Arlene's love of learning and commitment to children drove her passion in education and her service to children. Beginning as a graduate assistant at Kent State University, she became a member of the Education Department. Her role in the University School model preschool brought children and college students together in a "hands-on" teaching/learning experience for education majors. Teaching experiences included public education in Ravenna, Ohio and the New Philadelphia, Ohio city schools. She also assisted in establishing the Early Childhood Department at Kent State- Tuscarawas Campus.
Finally, as Director of the HARCATUS Head Start program, Arlene and a team of teachers and staff provided services in a three-county area for financially disadvantaged children and their families. Arlene was instrumental in the purchase of the first building for a learning center for Head Start. Also, a preschool program was established on the KSU Tuscarawas Campus for the children of college students. In addition, a certification program for Head Start staff was initiated on campus in coordination with campus staff.
Arlene was awarded the 2002 State of Ohio Meritorious Service Award. She was credited for improving and establishing playgrounds in the tri-county area. She was also awarded the New Philadelphia teaching award for dedicated services. Arlene had the full support of her family in professional activities. The support was reciprocal.
Arlene and Doyle shared a lifetime of love and family involvement either together or cheering from the sidelines. Cherished memories remain with those who survive them: sons: Dr Brent Bolyard (Amy), Brady Bolyard (Heather); grandson Dr Adam Bolyard (Chloe) and great granddaughters Amelie and Eloise Bolyard. All siblings of both Doyle and Arlene preceded them in death. Surviving in-laws include Joan (Larry Bolyard), Joyce (Lowell Bolyard), Meredith (Keith Bolyard), and George Ann (Donald Ford). Many wonderful nieces and nephews are too numerous to name.
Arlene shared her life with many friends, especially those who joined her around her kitchen table and "solved" the world's problems. In her memory, share time with a friend and let them know how important they are. Please read a book to a child.
