Obituary

Anna M. (Schnitzer) Ratcliff, formerly of Springfield, Missouri, passed away at her daughter's home in Rolla, Missouri on August 29, 2018 due to complications from a recent fall.  Anna was born on December 28, 1927 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  She was the fifth daughter of Joseph A. and Mary Friga Schnitzer.  As a child, Anna was known as Anna Mae, but few were brave enough to call her that in later years.  She graduated from St. Scholastica Academy and attended nursing school for a brief time.  However, Anna found she loved working with numbers and went on to become a bookkeeper for the Coca Cola Company in Fort Smith, Arkansas and for the Chase Candy Company in St. Louis, Missouri.

Anna married John Joseph Ratcliff Sr. on January 13, 1951.  John affectionately referred to his wife as Annie.  They moved to St. Louis, Missouri where John was employed with the Frisco Railroad.  John and Annie had three children: John Joseph Ratcliff Jr. of Springfield, Missouri, Susan Ann Ratcliff Baldwin of Rolla, Missouri, and Mark Ryan Ratcliff of Orlando, Florida.  The family moved to Springfield, Missouri with the Frisco Railroad in 1961.

Annie was an involved member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was instrumental in later years in the development of the first Holy Trinity Catholic Church Ladies' Guild.  She was also an active volunteer at Crosslines, The Kitchen, and as a Pink Lady for St. John's Hospital.  Annie was an early advocate for children with disabilities, supporting inclusion in regular education classrooms.  In her final months, she volunteered at The Community Partnership in Rolla, Missouri.

Annie was an incredible mother and volunteered at all of her children's activities.  She taught them to give back to their community.  Her quiet strength was evident to all who knew her, and she loved deeply.  Annie was very soft spoken and lived her life performing "small acts with great love."

Annie was a voracious reader, loved cross stitching, hand quilting, shopping, and going to Arby's.  But most of all, Annie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Annie is survived by one sister, Florence (Flodie) Schnitzer Roman; a son, John Joseph Ratcliff Jr (Marcia) and their children, Kristen Ratcliff McGovern (Ryan) and Andrew Ratcliff (Katie); a daughter, Susan Ann Ratcliff Baldwin (Christopher) and their children, Kathleen Baldwin and John Christopher Baldwin; and another son, Mark Ryan Ratcliff (Rosie) and his sons, Ryan Ratcliff (Samantha), Alex Ratcliff and fiancé Annabelle Wallace, and Gabe Ratcliff with Jordan Burns.  Additionally, Anna is survived by one great-grandchild, Olivia McGovern; brother-in-law, Joseph Van Hatten; and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear family friends, Joe and Connie Byrnes.

Annie was preceded in death by the love of her life, John.  Her parents, Joseph and Mary Schnitzer; her sisters, Rosemary Schnitzer, Isabelle Schnitzer Hall and Barbara Schnitzer; brothers-in-law, Harry Hall and Mitchell P. Roman; sister-in-law, Mary Ratcliff Van Hatten; niece, Betsy Roman Szramek; and great-grandson, Bennett Harrison Hance also preceded her in death.

Visitation will be held at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  The Rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m.  A Mass celebrating Annie's life will be held on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Springfield, Missouri.  Interment will follow at Missouri Veterans Cemetery.

Annie believed in taking care of those in need and supported the programs of The Community Partnership.  She requested that contributions be sent to The Community Partnership's general fund (1101 Hauck Drive, Rolla, MO 65401) in lieu of flowers.
