Obituary

Jack was born in a cabin on a mountain in Burnside, KY, July 20, 1925. His parents were the late Rev. A.Z. and Deloris (Jackson) Matthews. After a full life of service as singer, pastor and evangelist for the Christian Church, he departed this life for his eternal home in Springfield, MO, at the age of 95.

He was the fifth child in the family. Brothers were Rev. Faust A., Bill and Monty and sisters LaVaughn (Doubt) and LaVale (Fugate). The four brothers later Organized the "Matthews Brothers Quartet" known in the Springfield and surrounding area for their gospel and spiritual music on KWTO radio and from concerts in area churches.

Jack spent his adult life as a Christian minister and singer. He grew up in a Christian Parsonage home where his mother and father were called to serve. He was ordained at the Richland, MO Christian Church in 1943. After high school, he attended Phillips University in Enid, OK. He then returned to Springfield where he served as part time minister to area churches while attending classes at Drury and SMS. While serving as student minister in Conway, MO he met the "love of his life" Jean Williams. They were later married on November 28, 1946 at Walnut Street Christian Church in Springfield in a double wedding with his brother, Bill and Waneta Davis.

Jack and Jean began their ministry together at Cincinnati Ave. Christian Church, Tulsa, OK. They later moved back to Springfield where Jack became the second tenor in the newly formed "Matthews Brother's Quartet."

Jack left the quartet in order to finish his under graduate studies at Manhattan Bible College in Manhattan, KS.

Before leaving Manhattan, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Sandra Lynn on Jan. 4, 1951. After moving back to MO another blessing was given- Stephen A. was born Feb. 11, 1953 in Springfield.

While serving as pastor in Mountain Home, AR, a new brick sanctuary was erected by the congregation. Jack felt the need for more education, for serving the Lord was eminent. The young Matthews family moved to Oklahoma and further graduate studies at Phillips University in Enid. After graduating from Seminary, he was called to the First Christian Church in Columbus, KS for his largest and longest ministry. Jack continued serving as pastor of churches in KS, OK and MO. He and Jean made their home in Springfield after retirement.

Jack was preceded in death by his son, Stephen. He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife, Jean. From the time of their meeting and following their marriage, Jean became his partner in service to Christ in the Church and in the homes they established and in every way Jack's Christian companion and mother to two precious children.

Other survivors on life's journey are a daughter, Sandra Lynn Shelley, Dorchester, SC; grandson, Jeffrey Shelley and wife Ashley; a granddaughter Alicia Shelley and a great granddaughter Jaclyn Alexandra Shelley. Also surviving is sister-in-law, Waneta Davis Matthews and many beloved nephews and nieces.

Jack was also blessed with many wonderful and supportive friends, many who have gone on before him. He was so very thankful for his fine physicians and health care workers that gave him such an increased quality of life in the last few frail years.
