Alta Faye Simmons, 82, Springfield, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018. She was born October 14, 1935 in Belle City, KY, the daughter of Grover and Lectra (Motheral) Andrus.
Alta Faye grew up in Murray, KY, where she graduated from high school at Murray State Lab School. She received both her BS and Master's Degrees from Murray State in Economics. She did some graduate work at MU-Columbia, where she taught for two summers.
After college, she taught Home Ec class for 11 years at Poplar Bluff High School and 26 years at Pershing Junior High in Springfield. She was also the Cheerleader Sponsor at Pershing for over 20 years.
During her teaching career, she, along with her husband, were very active in the American Vocational Association and held a national office in the Association of Home Economics teachers.
Alta Faye was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, where she served as President of the Alpha Gamma Chapter. She was also a member of the State and Local Retired Teachers Association and was treasurer of the Homemaker's in Homemaking Club.
She was an avid Kentucky Basketball fan and in retirement became as accomplished quilter.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Alta Faye is survived by her husband, Don Simmons; two sons, Kurt Simmons and Karl Simmons; all of Springfield; and a sister-in-law, Helen Simmons, Ventura, CA.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2018 in First Baptist Church with the Reverend Michael Overton officiating, under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hazelwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until service time Wednesday in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Foundation Children's Ministry, 525 South Avenue, Springfield, MO 65806.
