Alta Elizabeth (Colwell) Fox was born on Feb. 6, 1915 and died Feb. 5, 2014, just 15 minutes before her 99th birthday. Alta was the fourth of five children born to Kate and Henry Colwell, in Cicero, Indiana. Following the death of her father in the flu epidemic of 1918 the family resided in Neosho, MO where she graduated from high school. Her mother lived in Sarcoxie, MO for many years and passed away at the age of 99 years. Later Alta moved to Springfield and shared an apartment with two girls while working in a doctor's office. She was dating a very special young man serving in the U. S. Army at Ft. Warren, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, when she got a call and he asked her to marry him. She said "Yes", took the train to Cheyenne, and on December 24, 1942, Alta became Mrs. Guy A. Fox, Sr. - a partnership she cherished for 65 years. After the birth of their son, Guy Jr., she became a fulltime devoted mother. She was a perfectionist in all she did - costume maker, cookie baker, quilter, seamstress and house keeper. She was an extraordinary mother-in-law and "Memma". Guy and Alta were members of Central Christian Church. Alta was pre-deceased by her husband, siblings, parents and extended family members. Her survivors are son Guy Jr. (Nancy), grandchildren Catherine Taylor, Guy III (Jessica), Laura Martinez, great-grandchildren Brianna and Jay Taylor and Rosita and Andres Martinez and extended family. Visitation will be at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral home Friday, Feb. 14th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A graveside service will be Feb. 15th at 10:00 am at White Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Children's Miracle Network.
