Dr. Alice Fleetwood Bartee, 71, departed this life on Sunday, February 7, 2010. She was born in Statesboro, Ga. in 1938, the daughter of Roscoe George Fleetwood and Allie Mae Hurst Fleetwood. Her grandfather served as a volunteer in General Lee's Confederate Army during the Civil War. She grew up in Thomasville, Ga. graduating as valedictorian of Thomasville High in 1956. She then attended Barnard College in New York City, and received her B.A. in 1960. She continued graduate studies, earning an M.A. and later a Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York City in 1973 in Political Science and Government. Among early teaching positions she taught at the British Embassy School in Bonn, Germany, and the Lenox School for girls in New York. She also taught at Oklahoma Baptist University and at Drury University before joining the Political Science Faculty at Missouri State University in 1973. During the next 35 years until her retirement in 2008 she taught and advised hundreds of students. Missouri State University awarded her two Excellence in Teaching Awards and a Master Advisor Award. For most of her career she served as University Pre-Law Advisor, helping many students to enter law school and go on to successful careers as attorneys and judges in governments and business. She also found time to research and write a trilogy of books:Cases Lost, Causes Won: Studies in the Judicial Process in 1984;Litigating Morality: American Thought and Its English Roots in 1992; and Privacy Rights: Cases Lost and Causes Won Before the Supreme Court in 2006. Although raised in the Deep South during the era of racial segregation, she became a champion of human rights and gender equality. She was pleased to be known for passionately holding to her liberal views, but always gave equal help and advice to students of differing opinions. She was among the very few women to attain the rank of full professor at the time and the first woman to recieve the Liberty Bell Award of the Greene County Bar Association in 1992. Dr. Bartee loved her church, University Heights Baptist, where she taught Sunday School classes. She served as the first woman on the state council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Missouri. Dr. Bartee loved her family. She is survived by Wayne, her husband of 47 years; by two sons and their wives, Clark and Odette Arredono Bartee, Fleetwood and Kathryn Christy Bartee; and one granddaughter, Shields Fleetwood Bartee. Visitation will be held in the Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10, 2010. A memorial service to celebrate her faith and life will be held at University Heights Baptist Church at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 11, 2010. Burial will be in Maple Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to University Heights Baptist Church, to the American Diabetes Association, or to the Alice Fleetwood Bartee Scholarship at Missouri State University.
