Obituary

Alice Lorene Lewis Nichols Bagley's journey ended on Saturday, 30 October 2010 at the Springfield Rehabilitation and Healthcare where the staff had diligently provided her with loving, expert care for the past 10 years. Alice was born on 11 November 1915 in Mt. Vernon, Missouri to parents Jordan J. and Gloria Belle Lewis. She was the sixth of nine children. When she lived in Mt. Vernon she attended the Methodist Episcopal Church and Sunday School which was established in September 1877 by her great grandfather, Rev. Wilson Whipple. In 1935 Alice and her young son, Allen Lee Lewis, moved with her father Jordan to Springfield, Missouri. They became active members of Pitts Chapel Methodist Church. On 16 October 1938 Alice married George W. Nichols to whom she was married for 18 years until his death on 14 September 1956. She became the wife of Jewell V. Bagley on 2 August 1961.She and Jewell attended Benton Avenue AME Church, where she was a member of the Steward Board and served asSecretary and Assistant Treasurer for many years. Jewell passed away on 8 November 1981 and she was again widowed. Alice was employed by the Ben Harrison family and also worked at the Paris Women's Wear store and area hospitals. She did volunteer work for several years at Kiddie Kove Day Care, the American National Red Cross and the Women's Society of Christian Serviceof the Methodist church. Reading with the Literary Calm Chat Club was also a great enjoyment for her. Her son Allen lived in California and she often traveled there with her sister Mila L. Banks where they visited with their families. Everyone whose life she touched will say that she was one of the sweetest women who ever lived. She never made judgments, gossiped or made ill statements about others. Alice is survived by her only son Allen Lee Lewis (Jeanie) of Carmel, California; her sister Mila L. Banks of Kansas City; her granddaughters, Starla Lewis of San Diego, Quelynn Lewis of Fontana, California, Troy Lewis of Glendale, California; her grand children and great grand children; her sister-in-law Mildred Lewis; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, including L. Alberta Duncan; her dear friends, Georgia Burton and Norma Duncan. Very special thanks to her nephew Richard Lewis and his wife Lynette who faithfully cared for Alice for the past 12 years. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations to Pitts Chapel Methodist Church, Benton Avenue AME Church or Season's Hospice. A celebration of Mrs. Bagley's life will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday 10 November 2010 at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Interment of her ashes will follow immediately at the National Cemetery on Seminole.
