Obituary

Alfred Ernest Quick of Springfield, Missouri (formerly Dixon, Missouri) was born on May 11, 1937 in Rocky Ford, Colorado to Robert and Mildred (Williams) Quick and departed this life at 4:11 PM on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at his residence in Springfield.  Al had attained the age of 81 years and 9 days.

Prior to his military service, Al attended Waynesville Missouri School Systems and worked at Fort Leonard Wood.  Al met the love of his life while they both worked at Page's Grocery Store in St. Robert, Missouri.

On November 8, 1954, Al entered into active duty with The United States Marine Corps at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA and honorably retired on October 31, 1975 at Naval Support Activity Mid-South Millington, TN at the rank of Master Sergeant.  During his military career, Al was awarded Pistol Sharpshooter Badge, Republic of VN Meritorious Unit Citation Civil Action with Palm and Frame, Good Conduct Medal w/5*, Meritorious Unit Citation, Meritorious Mast, Republic of VN Campaign Medal w/1960 Device, Parachutist Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Certificate of Commendation and the Vietnam Service Medal.

His service and training included Aircraft Maintenance Chief, Jet Engine Mechanic, Airborne/ Ranger with 68 parachute jumps, basic demolition school, NCO Leadership Course, Aviation Familiarization, Mechanic Fundamentals, Aviation Machinist, Class "C" Maintenance Course, Ranger Advanced Infantry Leadership, 16mm Projection School, Personnel Accounting, Aviation Maintenance Data Fundamentals. Power Plants and Relay Systems, Supervisors Course, Aviation Maintenance Officer Course, Tactics of the Marine Rifle, Portable Flame Thrower, Operations Against Guerrilla Units, Landmine Warfare Explosives and Demolitions.

Al's service to his country took him and his family to many duty stations during his 21 years;  Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, CA; Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA; Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Jacksonville, NC; Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Yuma, AZ;  Iwakuni & Okinawa, Japan;  De Nang, Vietnam;  Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, CA;  Marine Corps Air Station, Olathe, KS; Marine Corps Air Station Arlington, TX;  Naval Air Station, Millington, TN; Airborne/Ranger School Fort Benning, GA & Eglin, FL.

After his retirement, Al worked as an independent contractor with Bell Helicopter International in Esfahan, Iran during the Iran Hostage Crisis.  He returned home to open his own business, Quick Plumbing and Electric.  He then worked for Goodrich and Ferrell Gas Propane Companies.  In 1994 he began work at Lowe's Home Improvement where he retired in 2012.  Al & Nan enjoyed traveling and spending time with family & friends.

Al was an active member of the Show-Me Gold Prospectors Club and the 417 Relics Metal Detector Club.  He was also a member of The Lesiman Roberts American Legion, Arlington Masonic Lodge #346 A.F. & A.M., Dixon, MO and the Cuba Chapter OES.  Al was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals Fan.  Al traveled to many sporting events with his grandkids to watch baseball and basketball, he was a lover of any sports his grandkids played.  Al was a member of Galloway Baptist Church, Springfield, MO.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Everett, Ralph, Clyde and Lonnie; nephews, Troy and Jeff; niece, Barbara; father-in-law and mother-in-law Cotton and Georgia Doolin.

On December 1, 1956 at Fort Leonard Wood, Al was united in marriage to Nancy S. Doolin and to this union of 61 years, two children were born.  Al is survived by his wife, Nan of the home; son, Robert of Springfield; daughter, Susan and husband Lee Howser of Olathe, KS;  five grandchildren, Ambra, Danielle, Aaron (Ally), Kevin and Colbi (Adam); five great-grandchildren, Ashton (Anthony), Blake, Cameron, Conner and Bentley.  He is also survived by one sister, Bertha Good of Dixon.  He has a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 24, 2018 at 9:30 AM at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, Springfield, MO.  Burial will follow at Missouri Veterans Cemetery with Full Military Honors.  Visitation will be Wednesday, May 23, 2018 from 6 to 8:00 PM in the funeral home.
