IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alfred L.
Penny
March 25, 1935 – September 5, 2023
Alfred (Al) Lee Penny, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home, the place he loved, on September 5, 2023. Al was born on March 25, 1935 to Roy and Gladys (Chastain) Penny in Clever, Missouri. He graduated from Clever High School in 1953, where he enjoyed playing varsity basketball.
Al was the first employee hired at Hoerner Box/Stone Containers in Springfield, Missouri. At the same time as he was beginning his career, he met the love of his life, Patti Halbert, at a drive-in diner and they were married a short time later, on New Year's Eve 1960. At Hoerner Box, he worked his way up to plant manager and retired after 32 years. Because he was deeply impacted by the Great Depression as a child, Al never took anything for granted and was known for his incredible work ethic and for treating his employees well. Later, Al's encouragement and wisdom were vital to the success of Penmac Staffing Services, which Patti founded in 1988.
Al was a lifelong gardener, tending to and growing landscapes with a quiet, persistent love. Just like tending to his flowers and trees, Al nurtured and grew his loving family with his abundance of patience, kindness, and unrivaled selflessness. Though Al has moved to a much greater place, the roots he cultivated in his family will never perish.
He is survived by his wife Patti, his daughter Paula Adams and fiance Keith Morris; his son John and wife Jennifer; his grandsons Stuart Stringer (Darla), Paden Stringer (Meagan); Cy Stringer (Courtney); Max Penny (Reagan); granddaughter Nicole Miller; his great-grandchildren Laightyn, Avery, Emrie, Finley, Penny, Chloe, Brett, and Saylor Stringer; Gracie, Ally, and JT Poindexter; and his sister Norma Lorenz (Fred). He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Julia Denwalt.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm on Monday, September 11th at Wesley United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, September 12th at Wesley United Methodist Church. Private interment will be at Maple Park Cemetery.
Donations in Al's memory may be made to the Alfred Penny Memorial Scholarship for Clever High School seniors at www.cfozarks.org/penny or checks payable to the Alfred Penny Memorial Scholarship can be mailed to the Community Foundation of the Ozarks; PO Box 8960, Springfield, Missouri 65801.
